In our campaign “Partners of HBI C-Flex”, we are introducing the team members of the members of our Supportive Advisory Board and their tasks in our project continuing with the team from the Samarco.

Samarco Mineração S.A.

Samarco, a 50/50 joint venture between Vale and BHP, has been a pioneer in Brazilian mining since 1977. Sustainability has guided its journey from the start: it was the first to process low-grade iron ore, turning waste into high-value products, and to introduce a 400 km slurry pipeline powered entirely by renewable electricity, linking the mine site in Minas Gerais to the port of Ponta Ubu in Espírito Santo.

After the Fundão dam failure in 2015, Samarco committed to social and environmental reparation and transformed its operations. Since resuming production in 2020, the company has adopted dry stacking and filtration of sandy tailings, eliminating the need for new dams. By 2025, Samarco produced 15.1 million tons of pellets and fines, operating at 60% of installed capacity, with a target of reaching full capacity by 2028. Samarco integrates innovation, responsibility, and community dialogue as central pillars of its future, prioritizing inclusion, human rights, and safety throughout its cultural shift.

As part of its sustainability strategy, Samarco aims to cut GHG emissions by 30% by 2032 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In 2025, it maintained 100% renewable electricity, reached an 87% water recirculation rate, and ensured full compliance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). That same year, Samarco earned the Gold Seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol for the fourth consecutive time.

Samarco also contributes to the HBI C-Flex project as a member of the Supportive Advisory Board, sharing expertise in high-grade pellets and supplying products for testing, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and decarbonization in the steel value chain.
